28 Luglio 2026Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly central role in telecommunications and is no longer limited to experimental projects or test environments; it has now become an integral part of network operational processes. The benefits are starting to become tangible, especially in terms of efficiency. However, the transition from technological adoption to full industrial maturity is still incomplete. This is highlighted in the study “AI in telecoms networks: the state of play in 2026” by STL Partners, based on an international survey involving operators, vendors, and industry analysts.
The growth of AI in telecoms is not uniform, and its evolution is progressing faster than companies’ ability to manage and integrate it. Customer experience is the area where AI has found the most applications: customer management systems and relationship processes are currently the main beneficiaries. In a highly competitive market, improving service quality is essential, and artificial intelligence makes it possible to anticipate user needs, speed up responses, and offer more personalized services, also contributing to customer loyalty.
At the same time, automation and predictive analytics are generating significant savings, particularly in network management and maintenance activities. Despite this, many companies are still unable to accurately quantify the return on investment in AI. The lack of clear metrics represents a major limitation, as it makes long-term strategic planning difficult.
Another crucial aspect concerns governance. More than the technology itself, it is organizational capability that makes the difference. Only a few organizations have developed structured models to manage AI effectively. By contrast, the adoption of advanced cloud platforms is more widespread, but often fragmented. Without clear rules, defined responsibilities, and risk control, it becomes difficult to turn artificial intelligence into a stable element of the business.
A moment of transformation
Different perspectives are also emerging within the ecosystem. Vendors and analysts tend to assess AI adoption more optimistically than operators. This is because, while for the former the implementation of a solution already represents an achievement, for the latter what matters most is the level of integration into business processes. This misalignment can slow down strategic decision-making.
Overall, the sector is in an ongoing phase of transformation. Artificial intelligence is now recognized as a key element for network development, but organizational, cultural, and managerial obstacles remain. The year 2026 therefore represents a consolidation phase: companies that succeed in establishing effective governance and defining solid metrics will be able to fully exploit the potential of AI. Others risk remaining stuck in a phase of continuous experimentation, while the market continues to evolve rapidly.
Wireless & Towers 2026, scheduled from October 7 to 9, 2026 at Bologna Exhibition Center, is the first international trade fair and conference in Southern Europe dedicated to transmission towers, infrastructure, technologies, and equipment for telecommunications, broadcasting, satcom, geospatial, security sectors, smart cities, emergency services, and territorial management.
