5G, Global Growth and New Opportunities Including for Italy
29 Luglio 2026Network APIs have been at the center of operators’ strategies for years, but the time for declarations now seems to be over. The sector is entering a decisive phase, where the ability to turn vision into execution becomes the real competitive dividing line. This transition is captured in the latest executive briefing by STL Partners, which describes a market suspended between ambition and inertia.
But what exactly are we talking about? APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are interfaces that allow different software systems to communicate with each other. In the case of telecom operators, network APIs enable developers and companies to directly access certain network functionalities—such as authentication, connection quality, or location—without having to manage the underlying infrastructure. In other words, they turn the network into a programmable platform, opening the door to new digital services.
The potential is not in question: according to estimates, the global market could reach $31.5 billion by 2030. But growth will not be automatic. Rather, it will depend on the industrial choices of operators, who are now required to demonstrate concrete leadership more than analytical capability.
The paradox remains clear. Telcos have long recognized the strategic value of network APIs, yet real investments are not keeping pace. Many operators remain in a comfort zone, held back by still-evolving standards, use cases perceived as limited, and the weight of past unsuccessful experiences. The result is a growing gap between public commitments and industrial actions, slowing down the entire ecosystem.
And the cost of waiting risks being higher than expected. It is not just about delaying new revenue streams: what is at stake is control over the value chain itself. Network APIs are poised to replace established models, such as those based on SMS for authentication, opening the door to new digital intermediaries.
The role of 5G investments
In this scenario, the issue of returns on 5G investments becomes central. APIs are not simply an extension of the offering, but a tool to monetize infrastructure in a more advanced way, enabling programmable models integrated with artificial intelligence. However, the value does not lie only in direct revenues—it also depends on the ability to attract developers, platforms, and enterprise customers that fall outside traditional models.
There is also a structural challenge: no operator can succeed alone. Previous attempts to develop telco APIs have stumbled over market fragmentation, making integration complex and the offering less attractive.
In this context, clear operational choices are needed: starting with targeted offerings, defining credible financial models, and above all, building organizations capable of execution. For telcos, network APIs are no longer an option to explore, but a proving ground to demonstrate their ability to turn strategy into real business.
Wireless & Towers 2026, scheduled from October 7 to 9, 2026, at Bologna Exhibition Center, is the first international trade fair and conference in Southern Europe dedicated to transmission towers, infrastructure, technologies, and equipment for telecommunications, broadcasting, satcom, geospatial, security sectors, smart cities, emergency services, and territorial management.
The event is part of the new European exhibition hub Urban Tech 2026 – The Urban Technology Show (e-mobility, traffic, commuting, security, telecommunications & data, environment).
